Getting Down in Ubud
I still remember the first time I stumbled upon a live music venue in Ubud. It was a drizzly evening, and I had just arrived in town. The sound of a guitar drifted through the streets, guiding me to a small, unassuming bar on Jalan Raya Ubud. As I pushed open the door, the warm sounds of an Indonesian folk band enveloped me, and I knew I had found my new favorite spot. Since then, I’ve spent countless nights exploring Ubud’s live music scene, and I’m excited to share my top picks for this week.
1. The Temple Club
Located on the main road of Ubud, The Temple Club is a popular spot for both locals and tourists. With a spacious dance floor and a wide range of live music, from rock to hip-hop, it’s the perfect place to let loose. Cover charge is around IDR 50,000, and drinks start at IDR 20,000. Be sure to arrive early, as the club can get packed on weekends.
I’ve seen some of the best acts in the country perform here, from indie rock bands to electronic DJs. The club also hosts themed nights, like retro disco and 80s rock, so be sure to check their social media for upcoming events.
2. Bar Luna
For a more intimate live music experience, head to Bar Luna on Jalan Raya Ubud. This cozy bar is tucked away in a quiet alley, but don’t let that fool you – the sound quality is top-notch. Expect to pay around IDR 30,000 for a drink, and be prepared for a more low-key atmosphere.
Bar Luna is a favorite among expats and locals alike, and it’s not uncommon to see a few familiar faces on stage. From acoustic sets to jazz ensembles, the music is always excellent, and the vibe is relaxed and welcoming.
3. Single Fin Bar
Perched on a hill overlooking the Wana Ubud Villas, Single Fin Bar offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. But it’s not just the scenery that draws people in – the live music is always on point. From rock to pop to electronic, expect to find a diverse range of acts performing here.
Drinks start at IDR 25,000, and the cover charge is around IDR 20,000 on weekends. Be sure to arrive early to snag a good spot, as the bar can get crowded quickly.
4. Kokoa Chocolate Lounge
For a more unique experience, head to Kokoa Chocolate Lounge, where live music meets artisanal chocolate. This cozy cafe has a relaxed atmosphere, and the sound quality is surprisingly good. Expect to pay around IDR 20,000 for a drink, and be prepared for a more laid-back vibe.
From jazz to acoustic sets, the music is always excellent, and the chocolate (of course!) is top-notch. Be sure to try one of their signature chocolate-making classes, where you can learn to create your own delicious treats.
